Tasmania’s forests in jeopardy

Bob Brown, the Greens leader, accused Prime Minister Julia Gillard of a “breach of honour” concerning the deal to protect part of Tasmania’s native forests known as “Inter Governmental Agreement” (IGA).
Last year, the state and federal governments agreed through IGA to preserve 430,000 ha of forests in Tasmania. This deal attempted to close 30 years of conflict over forestry. But yesterday, a federal conservation agreement announced a protection for only 428,050 ha.
After checking that alternative forest could not be ready for logging in due course, as provided by existing logging contracts, the governments ruled to take out 1,950 ha from the originally protected forest. In addition the governments said that the protected area still represents 99.5% of the reserves.
The Greens supported the Labor Party in order to form the Government. In spite of Senator Bob Brown’s accusations, the Greens continue to support the Labor Party because the Liberal Party has an even worse forest policy.
Prime Minister answers: "Senator Brown might be prepared to walk away from this historic agreement and put the entire (reserve) area in jeopardy [...]”. She adds: “the practical work done helps working people and preserves forests to the future.”
Environments groups feel aggrieved by the reduction of the interim reserve which has shaken their confidence in the broader IGA which was aimed at protecting 572,000 ha. To finish with, 43 logging coupes will be harvested between now and June 30 in this protecting area.

My opinion:
It’s important to protect the Tasmania’s forest because this is natural heritage, an environment subject and it’s very important for the natives. There is also a political element which brings together different political parties. But Australia can’t fulfill all its contracts and this is an economic question that the government has to solve.

Bob Brown, le leader du parti des Verts, a accusé le Premier Ministre Julia Gillard de « manquement àl’honneur » à propos du contrat de protection d’une partie des forêts indigènes de Tasmanie, connu sous le nom d’Accord Inter Gouvernemental (IGA).
L’année dernière, les gouvernements de l’état et fédéral se sont mis d’accord à travers le contrat IGA pour préserver 430,000 ha de forêts en Tasmanie. Ce contrat devait mettre un terme à 30 ans de conflit forestier. Mais hier, un accord de conservation fédérale a annoncé la protection de seulement 428,050 ha.
Après avoir vérifié que les forêts alternatives ne seraient pas prêtes pour les exploitations forestières en temps voulu, prévues par les autres contrats existants, les gouvernements ont diminué la surface protégée de 1,950 ha. En outre, ils ont ajouté que la surface protégée représentait encore 99.5% des réserves.
Les Verts ont apporté leur support au Labor Party pour former un gouvernement. Malgré les accusations du Sénateur Bob Brown, les Verts continuent de soutenir le Labor Party car la politique forestière du Party Libéral pourrait s’avérer pire.
Le Premier Ministre a répondu : « Le Sénateur Brown pourrait passer à côté de cet accord historique et mettre la réserve entière en danger […] ». Elle a ajouté: « le travail pratique effectué aide les gens à travailler et préserve les forêts à l’avenir. »
Les groupes environnementaux se sentent floués par la réduction de la réserve protégée, ce qui a amoindri leur confiance envers l’IGA qui voulait protéger 572,000 ha de forêts. Pour finir, 43 exploitations forestières seront effectuées entre aujourd’hui et le 30 juin dans cette zone protégée.

Mon opinion :
Il est important de préserver la forêt de Tasmanie car c’est un patrimoine naturel, un sujet environnemental très important pour les indigènes. C’est également un élément politique qui met d’accord différents partis politiques. Cela dit l’Australie ne peut pas honorer tous ses contrats et c’est une question économique que le gouvernement doit résoudre.
